Yesterday, I arrived at the Eleanor Roosevelt College of UCSD along with 150 Californians to begin the 4-week COSMOS program. The program is split into 7 clusters, all pertaining to science or math. I am in Cluster 1: Adventures in Embedded Computer Systems. After a few orientation activities, I bade farewell to my parents. I tried to settle into my dorm room before we all had dinner in our dining hall, Cafe Ventanas. We spent the night doing icebreaker and orientation activities, with all 150 of us, as a suite (11 people), a floor (22 people) and then as a cluster (21 people). Today we began our first day of classes. After breakfast we sat through a few lectures, learning the basics of computer science, including binary and hexadecimal code, embedded systems themselves and the interactions between a CPU and computer memory. After lunch, we had lab time, where we put some of our programming skills to work, turning on and off lights on a motherboard. As the days go by, we will learn more programming, which will culminate in a final project.
